Localization and location groups
A localization ("location") is a named set of number-manipulation rules — strip a trunk prefix, add a country code, and similar — that a device inherits simply by belonging to it. Reached under Routing > Localization.
This is a different feature from the destinations used for pricing: a localization rule does not touch what a call costs, only the digits of the number itself, before routing decides anything else.
The localization list
Every install starts with a Global localization that every device without a more specific one falls back to. Click Create localization to add another, then Rules on a row to edit it, or Devices to see (and assign) which devices use it.
Three kinds of rule
Open Rules on a location and it splits into three sections — a rule lives in exactly one of them:
- Destination rules — rewrite the number being dialled.
- Source rules — rewrite the caller ID (source number).
- Combined rules — rewrite both destination and source in one rule, optionally pulling the source side from a location group instead of typing it again.
Click Add rule in any section for a small inline form: Name, Cut (the leading digits to remove), Add (digits to prepend instead), Min. length / Max. length (the rule only applies to numbers in this length range), and, for a source or combined rule, a Change CallerID name checkbox alongside the same cut/add/length fields for the source side.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
Cut / Add | Remove this many leading digits (or this exact prefix), then prepend this instead. The demo rule's 0 → 41 turns a locally-dialled 0791234567 into E.164 41791234567 — the trunk 0 is cut, the Swiss country code 41 is added. |
Min. length / Max. length | The rule only fires on numbers whose length (after any cut) falls in this range — keeps a short internal extension from being rewritten as if it were an external number. |
Change CallerID name | Source/combined rules only: also rewrites the caller ID's display name, not just the number. |
A combined rule can also apply to a specific LCR, tariff, DID or device ID instead of the location as a whole — leave these at none for a rule that applies to every call through this location.
Location groups
Routing > Location Groups holds reusable source-manipulation rules, referenced by a combined localization rule's Source via location group option — useful when several locations should rewrite caller IDs the same way without each one typing its own cut/add pair.
Back on the location's Combined rules section, ticking Source via location group and picking this group is what produced the src [Group] tag on the demo combined rule above — the source side comes from the group instead of being typed on the rule itself.
A location only affects devices that belong to it — see Devices on a location's row to assign them. A device with no location assigned falls back to Global.
Check
Open a location's Rules page and confirm the rule you added shows active under the section you expect (Destination, Source or Combined) with the Cut → add and Length you intended.
