Assigning a DID

Getting a free number to actually ring a phone is two steps: reserve it to a customer, then assign it to one of that customer's devices. This page also covers making a DID the device's outbound caller ID, and the release/close/terminate buttons.

Open the DID (Routing > DIDs, click its number) and scroll to the Status & assignment panel. Everything on this page lives there, plus the separate Outbound CallerID panel next to it.

Step 1 — Reserve to a user

Pick a customer under Reserve / assign user and click Reserve. The DID's status becomes reserved and its Currently assigned line shows the owner, but Device stays "Not assigned" — nothing routes yet.

A reserved DID — owned by a customer, no device yet.

Step 2 — Assign a device

Once a DID is reserved (or already owned), pick one of that customer's devices under Assign device (active) and click Assign. The status becomes active, and the Currently assigned line now shows both the owner and the device, each a link to its own page.

The same DID after assigning a device — status "active".
Tip

You can skip the reserve step and assign a device straight away — a free DID with a device picked and Assign clicked goes directly from free to active. Reserving first is mainly useful when you want to hand a number to a customer before you know (or they have) a device yet.

Releasing, closing, terminating

ButtonWhat it does
Release (active)Clears owner, device and callflow — the DID goes back to free and can be reserved or assigned again.
CloseMarks the DID closed. Kept in the system with its history and comment, just not routing calls.
TerminateMarks the DID terminated for good — asks "Really terminate this DID?" first, since it is the one status meant to be final.

DID as outbound caller ID

The Outbound CallerID panel next to Status & assignment lets you make this DID the device's outgoing caller ID in one click — useful once a device already has an inbound number and should show that same number when it calls out.

Outbound CallerID — one click sets the device's caller ID to this DID.
Warning

Set as CID overwrites the device's caller ID immediately — there is no confirmation dialog, by explicit design. It also switches the device to a fixed caller ID and removes it from every CID pool it was in (see number pools): otherwise the pool's rotation would silently overwrite the number again on the very next call. Do this only when you mean the device to always show this DID outbound.

Check

On the DIDs list, the row now shows active and, in the Owner/device column, both the customer's name and the device's name/extension as links. Opening the customer's device page shows the same DID under its assignments.
